Mike Phelan: Manchester United appoint assistant manager on three-year contract
Mike Phelan has been appointed Manchester United assistant manager, the Premier League club have confirmed.Phelan has been working as the club’s number two under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer since the former United striker returned to Old Trafford as interim manager earlier this season.And he will not stay on past the end of the campaign, signing a three-year deal with the Red Devils.Phelan had been a leading contender to become Manchester United’s first ever technical director, with Solskjaer understood to be backing him for the role.However, Sir Alex Ferguson’s former assistant remains in his existing position, with Michael Carrick and Kieran McKenna joining him on Solskjaer’s first-team coaching staff. Phelan said: “I am thrilled to be back as assistant manager. Manchester United has been a huge part of my life since I joined as a player in 1989 and I am delighted to be able to continue that relationship in this key role.“Since returning in December, I have enjoyed working with Ole, Michael, Kieran, Mark and Emilio and we are all focused on preparing for the new season.”

Solskjaer added on Phelan’s appointment: “Mike is a great person to have around and has been invaluable to me since we returned in December.“He brings a wealth of experience to this role with a long established connection to the club.“We have a good group of coaching staff and we are already working on the challenges that lie ahead as we plan for the new season and the future beyond.”
