Unai Emery reveals Danny Welbeck could get new Arsenal contract as he prepares to return after injury nightmare
Unai Emery has revealed Danny Welbeck could well get a new contract as he hopes to make a return from injury before the end of the season. The Arsenal forward broke his ankle in November at home against Sporting Lisbon in the Europa League, but is set to return to training imminently.Danny Welbeck could well be an Arsenal player next season2

Although the Spaniard conceded Welbeck is unlikely to play again this season, he insisted the England international is ‘progressing very well’ in his rehab. With Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang flourishing in his absence, it remains to be seen how regularly the former Manchester United star will start at the Emirates. As such, it was widely expected the 28-year-old would leave in the summer – something Emery refused to rule out.“He’s progressing very well,” Emery said. The striker broke his ankle back in November2

“He is working and starting to touch the ball and to work on the pitch. His progress with such a big injury is going very well.“It’s difficult for him to play matches this season but he is progressing very well and maybe the doctor will tell us he can come train with us in the last weeks of this season.“After, his individual thing is to speak with the club [about his future].”The striker’s nationality may well be also crucial to securing his future in north London.Losing Jack Wilshere in the summer to West Ham United and Callum Chamber’s loan move to Fulham meant the Gunners had no English representation during the international break. And Emery may well keep Welbeck as he wants senior players to inspire the club’s youngsters to represent their country.“Every [English] team needs English players,” he continued.“Danny has his injury now. He was going with the national team and we were happy for him and the national team. “[Promising English players] are now in [Arsenal’s] under-18s, under-19s, under-20s and under-21s teams.“We have a lot of players with the possibility to grow up with us and be part of our future, and also with the national team.”

Following the announcement, a number of clubs tweeted their condolences, as did Brentford fan Natalie Sawyer
